THE BUILD PORTFOLIO MANIFESTO

For humanity, for this planet, for posterity.

Build Portfolio is a bastion of ethical technology. It is apolitical and areligious. It is held for the long horizon.

The institution does not operate. It does not ship. It does not deliver services. It holds the standard. The siblings, Build Today, Build Tomorrow, Build Together, We Build Together, steward the standard in their domains.

The principles below are the working document the institution holds itself to.

I.

ON TIME

1.

We hold for posterity, not for cycles.

What we hold is meant to last for decades. Our horizons, our judgment of what is finished, and our willingness to release reflect that scale.

2.

Long horizons over short returns.

A profitable quarter that compromises the long horizon is not a profitable quarter. We measure work against decades, not against fiscal periods.

3.

Some work is held for years before it is released.

Not everything we begin should reach the world. Some work is held until it earns its place. Some is never released. We do not confuse motion with progress.

II.

ON RESTRAINT

4.

Restraint is a craft.

The most considered work is often the work held back. Subtraction is a discipline. We choose what we will not allow into existence as carefully as we choose what we will.

5.

We allow into existence only what should exist.

Capability is not justification. Many products could be made. Few should exist. The institution holds itself to the second standard.

6.

Honesty about state.

Active. In development. In formation. In study. We name where each piece of work is and let the reader see the state plainly.

III.

ON POSITION

7.

We hold the door open to anyone whose work aligns with the principles.

The standard is alignment with the principles, not political conformity. We hold the institution open across sectors, sensibilities, and geographies. We do not affiliate with anyone whose work would compromise the principles.

8.

We are honest about what we do not know.

We say what is held, what is in formation, what is uncertain, and what we have not figured out. The institution's credibility depends on this.

9.

Profit and purpose are not in tension. Profit holds purpose.

The institution must sustain itself to hold its work. Profitable institutions can serve their mandate for decades. Unprofitable ones cannot. We treat profit as the condition that allows the institution to remain.

IV.

ON PURPOSE

10.

Reflective. Infrastructural. In service of mission. The institution holds all three.

The portfolio's mandate spans operational systems, the inner life of the human person, and public-benefit infrastructure. Each register is technology done seriously. None is more legitimate than another.

11.

The institution holds only what it believes.

The institution does not affiliate with work it cannot defend. It does not accept specifications it does not respect. It does not allow into existence on a deadline.

12.

Hold for what lasts.

Beauty is a form of seriousness. Quiet usefulness ages better than novelty. The institution holds the kind of thing that, decades from now, will still feel like it was made by someone who meant it.

A WORKING DOCUMENT

This Manifesto is a working document. The institution reviews it as the work matures and the principles are tested. The current revision was written in MMXXVI.
